The theme for Day 13′s celebrating National Poetry Month is “OCEAN.” Click HERE for details of this haiku celebration of throughout the month of April.
I love just about everything about the ocean–the sound of the waves, the scent of salt, seaweed and fish in the air, the cry of seagulls. But one of the things I love most is watching sandpipers being chased by waves.
Share your haiku about the OCEAN in the comments of this post and you’ll be entered in the drawing for one of three signed copies of LIFE: HAIKU BY HAIKU! Only three rules:
- Must be your original haiku (which is typically seventeen syllables, three lines of 5-7-5 syllables each, but I won’t be a stickler.)
- Must be entered in the comments of this blog post
- Must be about the topic of the day

we wrecked the ship
in turmoil of deceit
treasure hunt is over
Oh, lots of story in that second line. 🙂
river
flows into ocean-
ultimate peace
As is life, Azim. Nice.
The tide had came in
Washing up bottles with notes
People lost at sea
I’ve often thought about writing a story about bottles with notes. A poignant haiku, Robert.
Waves rolling to sea
Suck sand from beneath my feet
Rhythmic, soothing sound
Janet, that second line is one of those “ah, yes! I’ve felt that” moments. I like it!
white elephants charge
frothing with rage
tsunami
“Tsunami” in the last line gives such a powerful end to your haiku.
the sea shore, cold feet
we looked west, the horizon
ate the sun
dipping in our toes
the sea circles the world and
touches us again
Yes, Steve. Cold feet at the sea shore. I’ve experienced that, but it’s worth it. And I like the image of the horizon eating the sun. But, I think your second haiku is my favorite. Intimate, yet around the world, too. Very nice.
bird tracks in the sand–
messages without bottles,
foot-notes for the sea
Ah, yes. Messages without bottles. Nice, Jim.
endless sea of waves –
awesome power seizes thought,
humbles my being
Hi Lori! The sea humbles me, too. Very nice haiku.
seashell to my ear
listening for the voices cast-
into the ocean
I love to listen to seashells, Lewis. Lovely haiku.
Jan not sure if I sent you a thank you. Haiku
Thank YOU, Lewis!
With each ocean tide:
An ancestor soul comes to-
Shore, we all meet soon
I’ll look at waves coming to shore differently now.
thank you.
Waves embrace us all.
Whale road, gold hoard we plunder.
Love her back we must.
